New/Incoming AFROTC Applicants
Congratulations on selecting Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Prescott and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) Detachment 028! You've taken the first step on an exciting path towards an outstanding academic and leadership education, with the potential to commission as a lieutenant in the world's most respected Air, Space and Cyberspace Force. I want to briefly remind you of some additional expectations as you prepare to join us.
First, for any student who has not received an AFROTC scholarship, you are still welcome to join AFROTC. There may be in-college scholarships available competitively for those who display academic and military excellence. Additional details on these opportunities can be found at www.afrotc.com.
For new students arriving in the Fall Semester, please register for AF 101 and AF 101L. We will send you AFROTC Applicant requirements and a “Zero week” schedule with the dates and times you will need to arrive on campus. “Zero week” is a Cadet and Cadre run event designed to welcome new students to the AFROTC Program and accomplish administrative applicant requirements. You are not required to attend “Zero week”, but applicants that attend are afforded early move in into the dorms on day 1. Most importantly, it provides an opportunity for students and parents to see what our program is all about. “Zero week” is always scheduled for the Monday-Wednesday prior to the Prescott Campus orientation. Information is usually sent out in early June, and then weekly as students register. If you do not receive any correspondence please contact us to ensure we have your correct information.
All new AFROTC applicants must complete the online “Check In”. This will provide us the information needed to prepare for your arrival.
AFROTC requires several documents for membership which are listed in the Applicant Checklist. You MUST have a current sports physical exam date no earlier than 1 August to participate in AFROTC activities, and it must be documented on the AFROTC Form 28, Air Force ROTC Pre-participatory Sports Physical. The university’s Wellness Center can only accommodate a limited number of these physicals, we strongly recommend you complete your physical before your arrival to avoid delays in your participation in the program. Note: Be aware that we do not have access to documents turned in to the university.
As part of your AFROTC online application, you will be required to report any adverse involvements that you have had with law enforcement or school officials. Please review your history and be prepared to document the following: type of involvement, date of involvement, name and address of arresting authority/court, and disposition/sentence.
How Can I Prepare?
Many ask what they can do over the summer to be better prepared for AFROTC. Attending to your physical fitness is perhaps the most important. A mock Fitness Assessment will be conducted within the first 30 days of the academic term (but not during “Zero Week” orientation). It consists of sit-ups, push-ups, and a 1.5 mile run. Note: Prescott’s elevation is over 5,000 feet above sea level. It’s extremely important to have practiced these events prior to your arrival to help with the acclimatization. Standards can be accessed here.
Applicant Cadets are required to wear an informal uniform during AFROTC Activities until they receive their dress blues in the spring semester. They will also be required to wear standardized physical training gear. Air Force physical training gear will be issued upon completion of all applicant requirements and once the cadet has been made an “Active” cadet. Please refer to the applicant checklist for uniform requirements.
