Simple safety measures will help students have a great start to their time at Embry-Riddle and develop good habits to help keep them safe throughout their lives.

Embry-Riddle’s Safety & Security Departments offers these safety tips for students: on campus, off campus, and in your daily lives.


  • Avoid dark, vacant, or deserted areas. If you are followed or see suspicious activity, move to a lighted area or create a commotion. Contact the Safety & Security Office by using a blue light or other emergency telephone.

  • Avoid walking alone at night if at all possible. Call Safety at (928) 777-3333, have a friend escort you, or use a blue-light phone to call for escorts. If you do walk alone, follow the tips below.

  • Avoid jogging alone, day or night.

  • Don't hitchhike, day or night.

  • Dress in clothes and shoes that will allow you to move quickly.

  • Tuck jewelry inside your clothing.

  • If you carry a purse, briefcase, or backpack, keep only a small amount of cash in it. If possible, do not carry a purse.

  • Carry keys, identification, and anything else of value on your person.

  • Carry a noise-making device-- such as a whistle-- and have it ready to use.

  • Be alert, observant, and aware of your surroundings and other people around you.

  • Report any suspicious persons or circumstances on campus to Safety & Security by calling (928) 777-3333 or 9-1-1.


  • Leave spare keys with a trusted neighbor; never leave them hidden around the exterior of your apartment.

  • Always identify visitors before letting them inside your residence. Request identification before you open the door.

  • Report to the police any unusual or suspicious activity or persons near your apartment or around neighbors' apartments.

  • Arrange for service people to come when someone else will be present.

  • In an apartment building, avoid isolated areas (stairways, laundry rooms, basements, etc.) when you are alone.

While Walking Alone:

  • Use well-traveled routes.

  • Be aware of what is going on around you.

  • Walk purposefully and briskly.

  • Walk in the center of the sidewalk, away from buildings, doorways, hedges, and parked cars.

  • When possible, walk on the side of the street facing oncoming traffic. If you are walking with traffic and a car going in the same direction pulls up next to you, reverse your direction.

  • Avoid traveling the same route every day.

  • If a stranger tries to engage you in a conversation, use discretion before stopping to talk. It is a good idea to say that you are in a hurry to meet someone.

  • Have the key to your home ready as you approach your door.

  • If you are dropped off by a taxi or someone in an automobile, ask the driver to wait until you are safely inside.

When Using Elevators:

  • Avoid entering an elevator occupied by a suspicious- or intoxicated-looking stranger.

  • If someone in the elevator makes you feel uneasy, get off at the next floor.

  • If you are accosted in an elevator, hit the alarm button and as many floor buttons as possible.

  • Do not attempt to pry open doors, tamper with the control panel, or overload the car.

When Handling Harassing and Obscene Phone Calls:

  • The best response to an obscene phone call is to hang up as soon as you realize the nature of the call. Don't try to find out who the call is from -- even if you think the caller is just a friend playing a joke.

  • If calls occur repeatedly, keep a log in which you record the date and time each call is received, exactly what the caller said, what you said, and a description of the voice (young, old, hoarse, accented, etc.) and background noises. Call Safety at 777-3333 to report an obscene or harassing phone call.

If You Sense a Potential Threat:

  • Assess the situation, then take action. You will have to decide how immediate the threat is and how drastic your action should be.

  • Move away from the potential threat.

  • Join any group of people nearby. If no one else is nearby, cross the street and speed up your pace.

  • Go to a well-lighted public place and call the police immediately.

  • If you believe a threat is imminent and you see people nearby to help you, yell, scream, or create a commotion in any way you can. Remember that the blue-light emergency telephones, indoor emergency telephones, and fire alarms are all part of the personal safety system.

  • If you see someone else in trouble, call the Safety office at 777-3333 or Police (911) immediately.

After Avoiding a Threatening Situation, Call the Safety Office Immediately and Report Any and All Details of the Incident: 

  • Describe the suspect's appearance: clothing, height, weight, skin coloring, scars, or marks.

  • Describe where the incident took place.

  • If the suspect was on a bicycle or in a car, describe the vehicle, license plate number, and direction of escape.

The Safe Walk program is designed to provide walking accompaniment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors who may feel unsafe walking alone on campus at night. Safe Walks are available from dusk to dawn, 365 days a year. Please call 928-777-3333 to request your Safe Walk.

The University maintains several methods to communicate immediate emergency information throughout the campus. These systems may be used when campus authorities and/or local emergency responders confirm a significant emergency exists and determine that emergency notification is warranted.

These systems include the following:

  • RAVE is an emergency mass communication system that allows subscribers to receive emergency information and instructions via text and voice messages to their phone. To participate, students and employees must opt-in to the system by clicking on the RAVE icon on the ERNIE homepage and provide their phone number.

    The campus sirens are externally mounted speakers with voice capability that can broadcast immediate exterior alerts and instructions to the campus. Such alerts may include severe weather, serious criminal threats, or the need to shelter within a building due to a dangerous chemical release.

  • Alertus is a communication tool that transmits the RAVE message to all PCs on the campus network. It will also interrupt PowerPoint presentations in classrooms to advise students and faculty of an emergency.

  • Email: All students and employees are issued email addresses. The campus may utilize email to send follow-up emergency information.

Access will be given to facilities for those students who are properly authorized. If a resident of a University-managed housing facility is locked out of their room, they should first seek assistance from a member of the Housing staff. The University Lost and Found is located in the of Safety and Security Department in Building 14. The Safety and Security Lost and Found is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

We have various items that were found in public, the library or turned in by one of our many students. If you find a student’s Eagle Card please turn it into the Eagle Card Office located in Building 13, if it’s after hours, please turn it into the Lost and Found in the Safety Office.

We receive various items from clothing, jewelry, computers, water bottles and USB flash drives. We keep most items for 30 days, after that time period most items get donated or discarded.

Safety Officers will assistance on campus to motorists and bike owners:

  • Jump-starts
  • Bike lock cuts (to registered bikes only)

With the exception of law enforcement officers and authorized Safety & Security Department personnel, the University prohibits firearms and weapons of any kind on campus.

Airsoft replicas, paintball guns, and archery equipment are allowed in residence halls if appropriately permitted.

Every student, faculty, staff member, or contractor operating a vehicle on campus must have the appropriate parking permit properly displayed on their vehicle.

The purpose of our Traffic and Parking rules are to protect the safety of all persons on the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Prescott Campus and to support the University’s efforts to provide a productive learning community.
The online report system allows you to submit a non-emergency report immediately. All cases filed within this system will be reviewed, if further investigation of your case is needed, you may be contacted for follow-up or additional details.
The Safety and Security Department accepts requests from parents to check on or make contact with their son or daughter if they have been unable to reach them by telephone or other form of contact. The Safety Department handles these requests for welfare checks in a manner that protects the privacy of the students as well providing for their safety and well-being. Welfare check requests can be made by calling the Safety and Security Department at (928) 777-3333.
Our officers meet regularly with their assigned residence halls to provide support, engage in Q&A, and interact as first responders to various matters. These partnership roles allow for ease of communication and create greater relationships between students and our officers.

The officer assigned to each student hall is responsible for educating and mentoring our students to ensure safety and security and to promote self-awareness about the crimes that occur on college campuses such as unattended theft, sexual assault, and underage drinking.
