Embry-Riddle’s Hazy Library Awarded Grant from National Endowment for the Humanities
Prescott, AZ., February 11, 2013
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Udvar- Hazy Library and Learning Center in Prescott, announced it has been selected to receive a special collection titled Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Bridging Cultures initiative.
Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys is a collection of books, three films, and digital resources chosen to familiarize students with Islam and the cultural heritage of Islamic civilizations around the world. Additional materials, including bookmarks, bookplates, posters and digital resources will further develop NEH’s mission to offer trustworthy and accessible resources about Muslim beliefs and the cultural heritage associated with Islamic civilizations.
“This is a great accomplishment for our faculty and staff. The University’s and Hazy Library’s goal is not only to aid the Muslim students’ educational process, but foster acceptance in the local community and help the students feel comfortable,” said Dr. Melanie Wilson, director of the Women’s and Diversity Center at Embry-Riddle. “Embry-Riddle strives to foster education in the local area as much as possible, and the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf would add to the resources which we could use for outreach to local schools, public libraries, and organizations.”
As part of the Yavapai Library Network, a county-wide consortium of libraries, Hazy Library will work to promote the materials through library websites, in-house displays in individual libraries, and community events featuring education and/or information about Muslim culture. One such event was a recent presentation called Getting to Know Muslim Neighbors, sponsored by a local community college whose library is part of the Yavapai Library Network.
In conjunction with the promotion, Embry-Riddle will also utilize these resources on campus with the Global Studies, Humanities, and Communications departments, which offer coursework in Arabic and Middle East studies.
