About the Foreign Language Institute

The Foreign Language Institute (FLI) is committed to serving learners who do not have opportunities to study Arabic, Chinese, English as a second language (ESL) or Japanese during the regular semester. Summer language programs vary in lengths (1-8 weeks) and levels (high school, college and adult learning). All programs are designed with Five-Cs (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities) standards and taught innovatively with a variety of fun and language-related culture activities. FLI helps students to increase their knowledge and appreciation of the diverse cultures of the world while enhancing their cross-cultural communication skills.

2010 Summer Program

American Culture and Language Program (ACLP)

Program Description

The purpose of the program is to develop English language skills and increase appreciation of Western and Native American cultures and to experience the natural wonders surrounding Prescott, Arizona.

Program Highlights

  • Small class size focusing on innovative, task-based learning activities.
  • Conversation partners with American students participating in the Japanese Culture, Language, and Communication Program.
  • Variety of field trips: Grand Canyon, Sedona, Flagstaff and Phoenix
  • Experience Arizona skies in a free Embry-Riddle observer flight
  • Participants will stay in the Embry-Riddle residence halls during the program period
  • A weekend home-stay program (a local Christian family) will be offered

$2,500 includes housing for 4 weeks and all field trips costs

Japanese Culture, Language, and Communication (HU199; Credit track: 3-credits; non-credit track: completion certificate)

Program Description

This program surveys Japanese culture and observes Japanese communication styles in comparison with those in English and Chinese. The program also practices basic conversational Japanese to enhance understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture and communication; however, this course does not count as one of the 12 required language credits for GSIS majors. There will be no directed study in Japanese language studies or Japanese classes during regular semesters.
This program covers topics such as Shuudanishiki (group consciousness), Senpai-kohai (seniority system), Chinmoku (silence), Haragei (implicit way of communication), Aimai (Ambiguity), Zooto (gift giving), Honne to Tatemae (private and public stance), Uchi-Soto (insider/outsider), and Kenkyo (modesty).

Arabic (3-credits)

Program Description

This program is designed for those who do not have the opportunity to study Arabic during regular semesters. Students will learn basic reading and writing in Arabic scripts, greetings, social interactions, geography of the Middle East and common survival speech acts such as ordering in a restaurant and asking for information.

Program Highlights

  • Pre-course preparation: A required pre-course will be offered on Blackboard May 15-30 and provides an introduction to the Arabic writing system and some basic conversational exchanges.
  • Sufficient instructor-student interaction: Class is offered Monday through Thursday, 9AM-12PM, with a required tutoring lab offered each day, 1PM-3PM. There will be an optional tutoring lab offered on Friday, 9AM-12PM.
  • Post-course facilitation: Continuing education opportunities will also be provided on Blackboard after the class ends.
  • Experience Arizona skies in a free Embry-Riddle observer flight.

Mandarin Chinese (LCH 103; 6 credits)

Program Description

The Foreign Language Institute (FLI) in Prescott will offer Mandarin Chinese programs of 6 credits through Interactive Television (ITV) from July 1 to August 16, 2010. The course is open to any student with no prior knowledge of Chinese. A number of full scholarships (including books and other materials) will be available for freshman ROTC students. ROTC students may also be eligible to receive other scholarship funding. Please check with your commander for possibilities. Upon successful completion of 21 credits over 3 summers, any student can receive a minor in Chinese. A number of continuing scholarships will be available for all 21 credits.

Class will meet on Daytona Beach Campus, on Daytona time, 12:30PM to 4:00PM Monday through Thursday, with breaks in between. In addition, daily online tutoring is also available.

You can apply for scholarship by e-mailing or calling Dr. Hong Zhan, Director of FLI. Please include your GPA, your year in school and specify if you are a ROTC student. Application deadline is February 1, 2010.

Program Highlights

  • Convenience for Daytona Beach students: Class will meet on Daytona Beach Campus.
  • Sufficient instructor-student interaction: Class is offered Monday through Thursday from Prescott time 8:30AM to 12PM Monday through Thursday with breaks in between.
  • Sufficient tutoring: daily online tutoring is available to students during and after the summer program.
  • Post-program support: One-year long, online, post-program learning opportunities are provided to students who successfully complete the summer program. Students can earn 1 Embry-Riddle Mandarin Chinese credit.
