Providing all necessary FAA medical and TSA security requirements are satisfied by the first day of classes, students begin flying within a matter of days of arriving on campus.
Yes! Our College of Aviation Career Services Coordinator has a wide range of opportunities with large and small aviation companies across the country who have partnered with us to provide students an opportunity to work within the industry and observe firsthand what awaits them after graduation. Students can earn up to six semester hours of credit for a summer internship.
The first step in this case should be to consult with the professor of the class. Additionally, there are volunteer student tutors for many classes. Lastly, each student is assigned an Academic Advisor to assist with course planning, registration and advising. There is ample assistance readily available to each student.
It depends. A student must select an area of concentration (AOC) for this degree program. These include: Airline Pilot, Commercial Pilot, Military Pilot, and Helicopter Pilot. The Airline Pilot AOC is full of required courses and has just three open electives in the four year degree program. It does not include or require a minor, but one can be completed if desired. However, it can take more than the required 120 semester hours for graduation. The Military Pilot AOC includes many military requirements added to the requisite Aeronautical Science courses and there is a strict requirement for the degree completion date. Students who select the Commercial or Helicopter Pilot AOC are required to complete a minor for graduation. Typical minors selected by students in these AOCs are: Air Traffic Control, Aviation Safety, Business Administration, Helicopter Operations and Safety as well as Applied Meteorology.
Taking two demanding flight training courses simultaneously is discouraged. It has been shown that students will have better results if they select one type of aircraft and pursue that line of training before moving into a second type of aircraft. There are pilots who have earned their pilots certificates to fly both, but they almost always focus on one aircraft at a time.
Our traditional semester schedule encompasses the fall and spring semesters. Many academic courses are available during the summer, as is flight training. If a student takes a typical 5 course (15 semester hours) per semester course load, they should expect to complete their degree requirements in four years (8 semesters).
Each student’s academic record receives a thorough review at the time of application by our admissions specialists. Many courses taken previously are eligible for academic credit. It’s important to note that the Aeronautical Science degree program is a structured technical degree program, therefore, it’s often easier for an applicant to receive credit for previously completed "general education" courses such as mathematics, physics, communications and speech, psychology, etc. than it is for upper-level aviation specific courses.
Depending upon the degree program the student selects, credit for military training and education can be awarded. Evaluation is made upon a case-by-case review.
