The Hazy Library and Learning Center is named in recognition of Christine and Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, two individuals who have established a powerful and lasting legacy of leadership and support for the aviation industry.
The architectural design concept for the Hazy Library and Learning Center is a “Metaphor of Flight.” The internally blue-lit illuminated staircase ascends as a continuous runway from the first floor entry, culminating at the second floor collaboration rooms. This ascending motion can be thought of as the motion of flight, during uplift on the runway. The second floor slides out to cantilever in two directions. At the entryway, a large vertical wall strikes a line with the horizontal building composition, symbolizing an airplane.
