Out of this world... Science!
We offer an education outreach programs geared toward 5th grade students in local school districts. Contact the ERC to schedule classroom or campus visits.
Modeling the Sun-Earth System
'What is Earth's Relationship with the Sun?'
Students are introduced to the Sun-Earth System through demonstrations and interactive modeling to gain an understanding of the Sun-Earth relationship, including apparent motion of the Sun and stars, the movement of Earth around the Sun and size-distance relationship of the Sun and Earth. Sufficiently dark room needed.
Modeling the Earth-Moon System
'How big, how far, how much?'
Students explore size &distance to model the Earth-Moon system. Students explore the reason for and names of lunar phases by modeling the Earth-moon-Sun system, including rotation / revolution of the Earth and moon, and real vs. apparent motion. Students receive a lunar phases pencil. Sufficiently dark room needed.
Modeling the Solar System
'How big are the planets compared to each other; how far apart are they?'
Two activities model the sizes and distances of the planets of our solar system. ‘Play-doh Planets’ uses play-doh to model the relative sizes of planets. ‘Pocket Solar System’ directs students to depict the relative sizes and distances of planets on a length of register tape which they keep.
Contact the ERC to coordinate activities and classroom visits.
